IMPORTANT
UPDATE
FROM
THE
OHIO
CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT MARRIAGE
Thank
you again to everyone who has helped circulate
petitions for the Ohio Marriage Amendment. We
turned them in to the Secretary of State on
August 3, 2004 and now wait for the petitions to
be sent out to each county board of elections
for validation of the signatures.
Although
we have submitted a sufficient number of
signatures to place the Marriage Protection
Amendment on the November 2 ballot, opponents
have promised a vigorous challenge to virtually
everything we have done in order to keep this
issue away from the voters. Although a dozen or
so other states will be voting on marriage
amendments this fall, it appears that Ohio is
the only state that is receiving this much
organized opposition with full-time staff and
attorneys hired to stop the issue.
The
last two attempts in Ohio to place issues on the
ballot for voters have been stopped or delayed,
effectively prohibiting the citizens from having
access to the ballot.
If
they are successful in finding ways to interrupt
our road to the ballot, it could be in
invalidating some of the petitions in whole or
in part because of minor circulator errors. This
could result in losing enough signatures to drop
us below the required 322,899 minimum. If this
happens, we would have 10 days from notice from
the Secretary of State to submit supplemental
petitions.
We
need for everyone to continue circulating the
existing petitions throughout the month of
August in the likelihood that this happens.
Please use the next several weekends to gather
signatures from anyone who has not already
signed a petition and then return any petitions
to the campaign office by August 31.
PROPOSED
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT FOR OHIO
"Only
a union between one man and one woman may be a
marriage valid in or recognized
by this state and its political subdivisions.
This state and its political subdivisions shall
not create or
recognize a legal status for relationships of
unmarried individuals that intends to approximate
the design, qualities, significance or effect of
marriage."
ADDITIONAL
RESOURCES
In his latest
book, Marriage
Under Fire, Dr. James Dobson defends the
sanctity of traditional marriage, presenting
clearly defined reasons for it in the legal,
financial, social and emotional arenas. Dobson
says Christians everywhere must rally to become
a solid force now more than ever.
