Ohio
Senators take anti-marriage, anti-family stand
on
Marriage Protection Amendment
Contradict
church and candidate questionnaire
Cincinnati,
OH - Although Ohio’s
fourteen Catholic Bishops have come out in support of State Issue 1,
the Marriage Protection Amendment, and are urging Catholics to vote in
favor of the ballot measure, Ohio’s two U.S. Senators Mike DeWine and
George Voinovich, both Catholics, announced that they opposed it and would
vote “no.”
Although
both senators claim to oppose same-sex marriage, their opposition to the
amendment is rooted in the second part of the measure. When
questioned about their positions, both senators engaged in what was
described as “political doubletalk,” by Citizens for Community Values
(CCV) President Phil Burress.
“The
concerns that Senators DeWine and Voinovich raise are totally without
substance,” explained Burress. “Both
sentences of the amendment define marriage and protect it from anyone
attempting to create counterfeit marriages by another name.”
Burress
said he was pleased to see the Catholic Bishops taking such a clear and
bold stance and hoped that, in spite of the two no votes of the senators,
Catholics statewide would rally to protect marriage on election day.
Another
inconsistency questioned by CCV was Senator Voinovich’s apparent
flip-flop on the ballot measure.
CCV
Vice President David Miller said that he “could hardly believe his
ears” when he heard that Voinovich announced his opposition to Issue 1.
Miller coordinated CCV’s Voter Guide project.
On
September 3, Miller points out that Voinovich signed and returned a
Candidate Questionnaire on which he said that he supported an Ohio
Marriage Amendment "that would limit marriage and its benefits to
only one man and woman" and opposed “granting same-sex couples
marital-type benefits and recognition through state recognized civil
unions.”
Miller
questions the Senator’s recent statements on Issue 1 and whether he is
being given all of the information on the real impact of the amendment.
“Was this just a mistake or is Senator Voinovich trying to play to two
different crowds?,” he asked. “I think the Senator owes the voters a
straight answer.”
