Columbus,
OH - In what is seen as a last ditch effort by
homosexual rights groups and others similarly
sympathetic to keep the Marriage Protection
Amendment off Ohio's general election
ballots, the Ohio Supreme Court today has
rejected their request and refused to force
local election officials to remove Issue 1.
In
a 6-1 decision, the Justices dismissed the
claims for reasons related to the timing of the
requests to remove the ballot measure as well as
other jurisdiction issues of the Court. The
preliminary decision may be found at the Ohio
Supreme Court's website by clicking
here.
Phil
Burress, chairman of the Ohio Campaign to
Protect Marriage which collected over 550,000
signatures to put the issue before voters, was
no doubt pleased with the decision. "In
these days of judicial tyranny, it seems like
anything can happen in our court systems
today," Burress said. "We are glad to
see another decision follow common sense and
court precedent and refuse to stop voters from
being involved in the democratic process."
Burress
says that although Issue 1 will stay on the
ballot, the victory is not won until November 2.
"Every voter in favor of the amendment must
turn out and VOTE YES to PROTECT MARRIAGE,"
he said.
He
contends that the marriage protection campaign
has a massive
grassroots educational effort underway that will
likely secure a win. But Burress says he is
still worried about the misinformation and
outright lies that the opposition is spreading.
"We know that those who want to undermine
marriage in our society will stoop to anything
to win. We saw it in this case and we'll see it
in their campaign all the way up to November 2.
We just hope and believe that Ohioans will see
through the rhetoric and vote what they know is
right."

STATE
LEGISLATORS UNITE IN SUPPORT OF STATE ISSUE 1
COLUMBUS
- At a Statehouse press conference, leaders from
the Ohio House and Senate voiced their support
for State Issue 1, the marriage protection act.
State Issue 1 would protect Ohio's definition of
marriage as a union between one man and one
woman.
The
legislators join the overwhelming majority of
their constituents who believe in the sanctity
of marriage, saying it was time to stand up for
traditional values and to recommit to the goal
of building healthy marriages and strong
families. Statistics have demonstrated that
children raised in families headed by married
parents fare better than children who grow up in
other family structures.
Many
lawmakers agree that despite the provision
passed by the General Assembly earlier this
year, which clarifies the definition marriage in
the Ohio Revised Code, it will not be enough to
protect against the ability of activist courts
to impose the values of other states on Ohio.
Vermont's legalization of civil unions and
continuing effort to legalize same-sex marriage
in Massachusetts and other states, coupled with
the Supreme Court's recent decision to strike
down all state anti-sodomy laws in Lawrence
v. Texas, have made it more important than
ever that the state of Ohio affirm its position.
